ACK... help

Okay so i finally got around to fillin up the PS fluid. So i filled the resevoir started then engine and cranked the wheel. I could hear the PS pump circulating fluid and it way easier to steer and all that. Felt like it was going good. Then i went up to put more fluid in the res and on both sides of the engine there was a white smoke coming up. Now i dont know what DEXRON ATF looks like when it burns or what it smells like but this was white and smelled sweet... which ive heard is what coolant smells like. The PS fluid was originally drained by itself when it was on its side so i was hoping there was no leak. Could the smoke be unrelated? I wasnt driving it, it just sat there idling... no way to get hot. The car hasnt been drivin except to get home since i buggered her up. Before i bought the car its got an almost new engine (30k> on rebuild) and all new hoses. Anyone?
