August 22, 200421 yr Hello everyone, The dear wifeys car (95 Legacy LS wagon, automatic) threw a CEL, but otherwise remained running fine. I cleaned the air filter and then disconnected the battery. After reconnecting, the CEL is still on and the car stalls almost immediately after starting like it isn't getting enough air. I can unplug the air mass meter, and it does run in limp mode, but as soon as I plug in the AMM, it dies. Does this mean I need a new AMM? Or is there anyway to make the computer "relearn" what is going on? I'd like to know before forking out $$ for the part. TIA
August 22, 200421 yr What you should do is first find out why it is throwing a CEL. If it does turn out to be the Mass Air Flow (MAF not AMM) sensor then yes replace it. I'm not sure if the 95's use OBD-II. If they do I've heard autozone will pull the code for free so head down there. If not Jiffy lube can do it for 9.99.
August 22, 200421 yr Author Yes you're right, I should find out what the code is. And the 95 does use the OBD2 so I have to take it in. Actuallly turned out that there is a hose that's sort of underneath the AMM that came undone when I cleaned the air filter. When I hooked that back up it runs. However now it seems to surge between 300-1000 rpms in neutral. Need to try and figure that one out. What you should do is first find out why it is throwing a CEL. August 23, 200421 yr get the code pulled. once you have the code we can help you diagnose the issue/details. sounds like a bad MAF to me.. Jamie
August 24, 200421 yr Author well I had wrong information and Autozone said the 95 has OBD1, so they can't pull the code. The Subaru specialists in town want $70 just to tell me why the damn light went on! Well the car is running fine now, so I might just drive with CEL on 'til I can find someone to scan it for a reasonable price.
August 24, 200421 yr Hmm, if it's setup like the 90-94 legacy's you should be able to pull the code yourself. Check either http://www.surrealmirage.com or http://www.legacycentral.org for instructions to do it. I'd give you the actual link but I'm too lazy
August 24, 200421 yr Author thanks THAWA. I'll check it out. On those sites it says 95s have OBDII, but not according to the autozoners.
August 26, 200421 yr I am a Newbie here today. I have just gone thru the same thing!! I picked up a used MAF at a junk yard for $75 and it is a cinch to hook up. It ran great for a while then started the same starting problems. My Roo is in the shop now just diag. with a bad Cam Crank Sensor. I don't know if they are related. Jude
