I was working on my parents 99 forester yesterday. They were complaining of the RPM surging up an down from about 1000 RPM down to 500 RPM. It would go up and down almost stalling. They told me they had a mechanic look at it one time when it was acting up before. The mechanic told them he cleaned the mass aif flow sensor. I took it out and sprayed it with brake cleaner. The problem is gone. It beat replacing it for $300 from BAP/GEON or $380 form the dealer. Has anyone else had this problem?

There is a recall on the Air Flow Sensor on your vehicle, you should check with the dealer . There may be an ECM update as well
