Liberty 96, Steering Pump Puzzle

Featured Replies

I recently replaced the seals in my Liberty '96 Power Steering Pump. When I first started the engine, the steering pump was working fine and there was no evidence of leaks. But,when I took the car for a test drive I lost my power steering momentarily. The power steering returned only after I revved the engine a couple of times. This happened several times over a 20 mile drive. Now, the pump is working O.K.. Does anyone know wheather the revving of the engine was bleeding the pump of air or was it a case of small particle of dirt within the hydraulic lines? Does the pump need bleeding after reconnection of the hydraulic lines?

All you do to bleed the system is turn the wheel fully in one direction, then the other, a few times. This should clear all the air out of the system.
