jerks when gears shift

Hi

I have a 96 Legacy (automatic). It has 119,000. When I start driving it initially there is a jerk when it moves from gear 1 to gear 2. The jerk seems to be less for all other shifts. What does this mean? The magnitude of this jerk is reducing throughout the day. At the end it is unnoticeable.
