December 5, 200421 yr hi today i realize in the first time with my car, whan the engine it's off, i got out and push the car a little forword to my yard,i found out that i can push the car forword or backword even whan the gear not just on N ,even when the gear is on D or in R ,i can still push it , how can it be? whan it's on P , i can't do it but, if i'll move it to D or R , i can push it like it was on N..... how can it be? whats wrong? can anyone please halp me with that... can it damage other things in the transmission if i'll leave it like this? thank you all. moshe.
December 5, 200421 yr Thats pretty normal to be able to push the car in gear like that in an Automatic.

December 5, 200421 yr Automatic transmissions only prevent the car from moving when they are in the "P" (Park) position. This position has a special locking mechanism, similar to pressing a bar of metal into the teeth of a special gear. All other positions leave the transmission unlocked, with only internal resistance to overcome.
