February 24, 200521 yr Hi, this is my first post, and I must say, what a great web site. Usually I've found the info I need w/o posting, until now... I own a 99 Legacy GT and I'm getting slight engine surge due to the radiator fan switching on and off. This happens while the car is warming up to regular running temp. After it reaches temp the surge stops. There is an audible click when the fan starts and stops. It's more annoying than anything but I'd like to know if I should worry about it and if I can fix/stop it. Also, why would the engine fan come on when the engine is cold? The car has 75k and runs great. The thermostat never budges once I reach running temp.
February 24, 200521 yr Are you sure it's not the A/C system kickin the fan on? If you have the heater in defrost, the A/C is operational.
February 25, 200521 yr Author Yes, I almost always have the heater on windshield defrost. It does jump 2-300+ RPM on idle and I get a loss of power while driving. Can I switch it to a different setting to avoid the engine surge? Thanks.
February 26, 200521 yr Well, as long as you aren't in the defrost position, mine's all the way to the right, then you are fine. I usually drive with the windshield and foot heat on, then turn on the A/C as needed to keep the windows from fogging up.
