1600engine dies if gas isn't applied. all vacuum hoses appear tight. pvc valve has vacuum. sparks look good, maybe a little hot. any suggestions appreciated. thanks.

Probably the carb's idle adjustment is off, you will need to adjust the idle speed and mixture.

Another possibility is the choke is stuck open, or that the choke adjustment is WAY off.
