Best clutch for Legacy?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone! I'm new to this forum, but I'm hoping someone can give me advice on which clutch might be good to put in my '95 Legacy wagon (EJ22 2.2 liter.) I'm looking for a clutch that can handle a little more HP than stock- I'm planning on installing a turbo and running low boost- not looking to add too much HP, but I'm looking for a clutch that can handle a little more HP than stock and won't slip. Also, I want to use the stock flywheel. Any suggestions? Thanks! -Jim

my shop will put a new clutch disk, flywheel, pressure plate and throwout bearing that will handle 165HP all day long for $600. what kind of HP do you think you'll be getting?

I'm estimating maybe 180HP or so- it's a custom kit using a turbo from an EJ18T- I want to run very conservatively- hoping to get away with only modifying the stock fuel management with an SAFC. I just want a little more pep without blowing anything up. I was planning on installing the cluth myself, but $600 sounds like a good deal- where is your shop located (anywhere near NJ?) Thanks!

where are you getting a EJ18T turbo? i don't think they exist. my shop is in south jersey, near blackwood. thanks

Maybe I have the engine # wrong- from an 1800 GL turbo, at least according to the ad on Ebay- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7945820992&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT Seems to be all there. Basically I'm looking for a clutch kit that grabs a little harder than stock and won't slip. If I rev up and drop the cluth on a fast break in traffic sometimes it slips a little- has for 2 years and hasn't gotten worse, I assume it's just not the best quality clutch or the pressure plate springs are too weak.

i think you would want the clutch to slip a little bit. just think, since you have AWD, your tires arent going to slip, so the only other thing that would give is your gears. thats what you don't want.

seems like alot of work for 20 HP. did you buy the kit off e-bay?

Yeah, got it pretty cheap on ebay from a guy who made custom pipes. It will be a lot of work for 20 HP (maybe a little more with bigger fuel injectors), but I'm sure I'll learn a lot. I'll take the risks on the '95 and hopefully by the time I can afford a used WRX I'll know enough to play with that and not blow it up. I'm not going to start the turbo project till it warms up a little and I can enjoy the work without shivering in the cold. The clutch could use replacing, so I figured it would be better to put one in that can handle a little more than stock HP- nothing too fancy (or expensive), just decent quality aftermarket.
