1988 Chaser - Check the Fuel Filter?

In November 2004, we needed to change the fuel pump on our 1988 Chaser. A month ago, the fuel pump went again and thankfully it was under warranty. On one hand, the mechanic said that the fuel filter was clogged, which was surprising as we'd only driven about 800 kms. He suggested that our fuel tank was rusty and that was what actually killed the fuel pump. He replaced the fuel pump under warranty, but made it sound like we needed to do something about our gas tank and, regardless, should have our fuel filter checked every 1000 kms. to see if it's clogged.

On the other hand, he wasn't certain that our fuel tank *was* rusty and we think that he possibly is just making excuses because he doesn't want to admit that he installed a faulty fuel pump in the first place. We don't know which is true, but we'd like to keep an eye on our fuel filter regardless and wonder if it's possible to get at it ourselves without a lot of trouble to make sure it isn't clogged.

Currently we're looking for a newer vehicle, even though we love our Chaser with its original Chaser detailing, but it's difficult to find what we want in our price range and we obviously don't want our Chaser to have trouble in the interim, particularly because we want to sell it.

Can anyone explain how to check and/or change the fuel filter in a Chaser? Is it a lot of trouble?
