April 14, 200520 yr i have a 1999 legacy wagon(postal) with california emissions setup. the vehicle speed sensor has a problem (speedo doesn't work all the time) and the obd-2 code says there is a problem. WHERE the heck is it. it's an automatic tranny on a 2.2L motor, i see what looks like 2 or 3 wires that bolt to the tranny, but no electrical plugs that plug to a sensor. can anyone tell me in detail where it may be. Thanks again, DanO
April 15, 200520 yr Do you know which speed sensor it is? Speed sensor 1 is inside the tranny I believe, and I think speed sensor 2 (which feeds the speedometer) is accessible on the outside. I believe it up near the top of the front diff on the passenger side.
April 15, 200520 yr Author yes i do, it must be thespeedometer sensor cause the speedo doesn't work all the time. i have looked and all i can see is wires that bolt to the upper sides 3 or 4 of them, but i can't seem to find the "usual" sensor that is bolted into the tranny with a plug on it. boy, now i appreciate how easy my taurus was to repair. thanks, DanO
April 15, 200520 yr Ok, I looked at the fsm. The speed sensors are located on the driver's side of the transmission towards the rear. There are actually three. The rear most one, located on the rear extension housing is the vehicle speed sensor 1. The next one front and near the top of the rear of the main transmission case is the vehicle speed sensor 2. The furthest one forward is the torque converter turbine speed sensor.
April 21, 200520 yr Author josh, what is the fsm that you looked at. i do see 3 sensors, but they all look alike and they all look internal. i sure hope i don't have to drop the tranny to change it. send me a reply if you can. DanO
