May 12, 200520 yr I took a digital photo of the area, but for some reason I'm not allowed to post attachments, so I'll try to describe it: There is a lot of what looks like engine oil around the front differential drain plug on my 97 Outback. The stuff is also above and behind the drain plug too, which may have been blown there by driving at highway speeds. It seems like it would be differential oil, but the level is fine. Engine oil doesn't seem to be going down either, but I'm wondering if there are any areas above and behind the differential that could be leaking engine oil. If anyone can help with posting the image, I'd also appreciate it. Thanks!
May 12, 200520 yr The only two areas that have ever leaked on my car are the axle seals and the drain plug itself.
May 13, 200520 yr A lot of the 2.5 engines (maybe all engines from the late 90's) develop an oil leak at the front seal of the engine which blows straight back underneath. I would check for a big dark stain starting at the front center of the engine. These leaks can become pretty bad, but usually at some point the oil starts to get on the exhaust and you will then smell the burning oil.
