Do I have to tear my Outback apart?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have new 05 Outback (LL Bean) and just had a trailer hitch installed. I didn't realize they wouldn't do the lights as well, so I purchased an aftermarket pigtail package that is supposed to clip right in to the exisiting electrical system.

I'm not real handy, and the instructions that come with the kit or horrible--just a diagram that shows a big circle around the back left section of the car. As if to say "This is where you plug it in." I took out everything in the back, including the spare tire, took off the left tail light, pulled open all the liners I could find without doing pernanant damage, and I can't find anything like a plugged group of wires. Can anyone tell me where I'd find it? Or how else to handle it?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Best,

Josh

I know in our MY01 OB Wagon the plug is on the passenger side, under the floor insert about half way towards the back seat. Not sure if it's in the same place on a MY05

It should be behind the RH tail light just pull the inner boot trim of that side and it should be just there. at least thats where it is over here in OZ

Thanks for the tips you guys. I'll check the right tail light and if it's not there, check under the passenger floor.

Hmmm...tore it open again and don't see it. Any other ideas?

Ok maybe I was a little confusing on my first post. The way I read your response it sounds like you checked in front of the rear seats? The MY01 models have it all the way in the back compartment. After picking up the rear floor to expose the spare, on the right side there is a carpet panel on the floor with a syrofoam type spacer below it. I had to remove these, and then fish in the body frame openings along the outer body to find the plug. Believe me, it took me 5 days and a couple of posts here before I found mine.:banghead:

Hope this helps.

Yeah they like to hide the things have a feel around behind the tail light it'll be there some where.
