I am building a lightweight sports car from scratch (1500lbs) and I am not sure if I want to use a Miata 1.6 rear end or a Subaru R160 rear end. I have some questions and the R160:

  • How much does it weigh?
  • How long is the pinion from the axle centreline to the pinion flange?
  • Can it easily handle 210 ft-lbs of torque?

If anybody has other recommendations for a light weight, IRS differential, I would appreciate hearing about it.

thanks

Don

I shipped one.....and it's about 40 lbs or so. I don't remember exacts, but I think it's around that ball park...give or take 10 lbs.

Yeah it can easily handle 210 ft-lbs of torque.

If you don't get an anser regarding the pinion, I can try and look at the fsm's when I get back in town

Requested length measurement is approximately 15.75 inches (+/- .125 inch). I don't have a scale so I can't give you a weight. Mine happens to be a Datsun R160. An option for you might be an R180 or R200 from Datsun/Nissans. Same measure/mounting as the R160, just a larger pumpkin area and a little more weight. The R180's are common on Datsun Z's.

FYI - it weighs 45 lbs with no inner CVs. Distance from output centre to pinion face is 400mm

Sorry, missed the "canuckland" and your need for metricality. :)

Let's see... 400mm = 15.650in

I guess my parallaxed measurement was a little out of specified tolerance.

*edit - Wait a minute... lbs... mm.. mixed measurements? Is your proximity to the the US of A confusing your measurements? 20.45Kg - end edit*
