July 1, 200520 yr I haven't owned a soob in a grip, but i happened to see a GL-10 turbo sedan for sale and also happen to have some extra cash to pick it up. What are important things to check/look for/ask questions about? also, does this car have a limited slip? it has AWD. thanks in advance.
July 1, 200520 yr Probably the most important thing to keep an eye on when checking the car is the engine- specifically the heads. When you start it, keep a sharp eye out for any smoke or sweet smell, and let it warm up to operating temp- if the temp keeps climbing, it likely has some issues. Transmission wise, if it's an automatic, be sure you test it in every single gear. The 3 speed AT's have some shifting issues sometimes, but the manuals are pretty trouble-free. This car WAS available with an LSD, and being a GL-10 it is more likely to have one. But, it's probably got an open diff. The way to tell is to look at the rear diff, an LSD will have a big L S D on the tag. If the tag's clean, this should be visible from several feet away. Body wise- you'll probably find some surface rust. Structural areas to check are the frame rails a few inches inside from the rocker panel, on the front floorboards- and the upper strut mounts in the rear fender wells. I think that about covers the basics.
July 11, 200520 yr Author I'm going to look at the car tomorrow, does anyone have any more advice? thanks much
July 11, 200520 yr having purchased a turbo sedan which came with with rust and heads issues I couldn't agree more with Trogdor's post. condition of suspension/alignment is another one to watch for, it's soooo tempting to rally these things and sometimes bumps happen
