July 10, 200520 yr am thinking of selling the 89wgn and my wife's 99 accord and going to a one car family...looking at legacy's.....what should i look for and what should i avoid? would like a/t because of my feet and a long commute btwn seatac and lynnwood..found a 96 outback wgn w/109 for around $6k...seems like a good deal and they take trade ins!
July 10, 200520 yr ...seems like a good deal and they take trade ins! My belief/opinion about trade-ins is that you will get a better overall deal by selling the car(s) privately and working out the best straight deal with the dealer. Any "great" trade-in price they give you will be added on to the final price of the car.
July 11, 200520 yr the legacys are great cars. I'd pay less than 6k for a 1996 though. Do the usual fluid checks, and make the A/C work. My dad's legacy physically has the A/C components, but we got hosed on the coolling operation. Sellers said they had just had work done on the A/C.
July 11, 200520 yr Author well, checked out and drove it this afternoon...a/c blows very cold...underside of oil filler cap is fine ....no leaks underneath....however, they did have the fuse in on the 2wd as there is a "problem" which they say involves a "coupler?" which they will fix....what is also strange are the leather seats which say "limited" on them but the limited option wasnt suppose to be out till 1997 so not too sure whats going on there...cv's look good....everything looks good except that coupler thing so if someone has some info on that please fill me in >>> alan
July 11, 200520 yr sounds like it had/has a rear binding issue. Find one with a sportshift tranny! I dont know when they started putting those in legacys, the 03 GT I'm looking at has it, the sales guy let me have some fun Now i may be wrong but a 99 accord should get you more than 6k even if it's in just ok condition...I'd look closely and make sure the dealerships not trying to get you.

I agree that it sounds like the infamous "binding" problem caused by problems with the transfer clutch pack and actuator. From what I have read here, this can be a very expensive problem to fix, on the order of $1500-2500. I do not know if simply replacing the "Duty-C Solenoid" fixes the problem or if they have to replace the clutch pack components also. But before you buy this car find out how they fixed it and run it past the knowledgeable New Gen folks.

July 12, 200520 yr Hello from North Bend!! I just bought a 1999 Legacy Outback last week from the Jeep Dealership in Renton (I also had a trade in). Make sure to do your homework, ie: get values from NADA, Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, etc. Have your print outs with you (for the Subie, AND your trade-in) when you go to negotiate the deal. They will throw numbers at you in so many formats, it can be mind-boggling! It helps to have your figures handy so you can feel more confident in your dealing. I also printed up ads for all other 99 Outbacks from AutoTrader.com that were cheaper than the one I was looking at. Any ammo you can have on your side will help immensely! The Subie I just bought was originally $11,999...I talked them down to $8,500...AND got a great price for my trade-in!! I must have sent the poor sales-guy back to his manager seven times before I was satisfiied. Be diligent...they expect people to haggle!! Good luck, and let us know what happens!
