August 13, 200520 yr I heard that there is a two wheel drive model of the legacy that has 23 spline shafts for the axle. I want to know if this is true and if so, which model or year is it?
August 14, 200520 yr What's the "normal" spline count? I haven't heard of any different axle for the FWD models. I'm running FWD AT axles in my AWD MT transmission.
August 15, 200520 yr I can confirm that carb'd '90 Legacys with fwd five speed called Legacy DL had 23 spline joints..this I know cause said carb'd ej18 was placed in a buds L-series with its fwd transmission and the stock L series DL axles slid right onto it..I've posted pics of this car in the past on the older generation board..
August 19, 200520 yr Author Thanks, I have a 82 fwd 5speed and i want to put an ej into it. I just wanted to know if i could get away without custom axles. 23 spline is correct for the ea81 isn't it? Or am i mixing up my cars?

Thats all good and cool, but the US market, unlike barbados, to my knowledge, never saw a carb'd legacy with a 1.8, or the 23 spline axles... EJ transmissions in the US have the same spline count as ea82 turbo's, 25 spline. N/A EA82's (except automatics) and all M/T EA 81's have 23 spline's. That being said, legacy 777 is absolutly right, all legacy front axles FWD, or AWD will swap with themselves, or with EA82 turbo, 3.70:1, trannies, and any automatic that's 3.70:1 I've gone roundy round (along with countless others) with Mudrat79 about this exact subject, the EA81 25 spline axle... he swears there is such a thing on a EA81 turbo coupe, but we havn't found them recently... I could be wrong, and I hope I am, so let me know where I can get 25 spline inner count EA81 axles.
August 23, 200520 yr Author oh well, back to doing things the hard way. I'm not sure about the 25 spline thing, I will have to ask carl about that since he has a turbo coupe.

YES YOU CAN! my buddy has a 93 FWD 5spd impreza, 23 splines. we discovered 23 splines when legacy axles didnt fit( too big, 25 spline) i guess the tranny mount is different but this makes an easy ej swap

So do you know of anyone who has a 93 fed 5spd impreza tranny? That will make the conversion easy.

OK, OK, I just checked my 4WD automatic trans that I took out of my Turbo Brat clone and GUESS WHAT???? 25 SPLINES Soooooo Mudrat79 is right again. Gary

August 29, 200520 yr I guess we better check the turbo coupe then and see how many splins it has.Turbo Brat clone started life in Japan as an '84 Turbo 2-dr hardtop. Now if 'coupe'='hardtop' (not as far as I'm concerned) then we're all on the same page. I think Subaru did call their 2 dr hartop a coupe, but for all practical purposes a hardtop and a coupe are really two different things. A hardtop means a car with no post between the door window and the rear side windows and the rear window retracts to give the 'look' of a convertible. A coupe (like an XT or EA-81 type hatchback) means a car that the rear side window is separated by a metal post and the glass may or maynot go up and down. Gary
