Which Oil in Oz for 06 Forester?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Got the brand new Forester X 2.5litre MY06 ... and the book obviously says I should check the oil regularly during running in ... and I should of course only ever use the Subaru branded top-up bottles.

Could someone please tell me which regular, commercially available oil is best ... that I can pick up at any normal Autobarn, Service Station, Cars Plus etc.? I'm in the Sydney metropolitan area in Australia.

The car has a Castrol sticker on it so I'm guessing it may have something of theirs in it currently?

Thanks in advance.

Mobil 1, 5W-50 or 5W-40.

You can elect to use 5W-30 as your handbook probably suggests, but that stuff is thin and has a tendency to burn off - therefore the need to check the level often. They factory fill modern cars with this watery oil to reduce fuel consumption...

Other oils I wouldn't mind using:

Castrol RS in 0W-40 weight, Castrol Magnatec 5W-40.

I bet the present oil in there is Castrol SLX 0W-30

I guarantee you it isn't. SLX was discontinued in Australia years ago.

The oil dealers use is Castrol Magnatec FM 10W-30 (a workshop oil, unavailable in retail outlets).

There's no need to run a xW-40 or xW-50 in a new engine requiring a 5W-30 or 10W-30, especially during the warranty period.

Dingbat, if you want "the best", in a xW-30, I assume you mean synthetic, which means your choice is Mobil 1 10W-30, Motul 8100 EcoEnergy 5W-30, Motul 300V 5W-30, or Redline 5W-30 or 10W-30.

Other non-synthetic choices are Castrol Formula R 5W-30, or Penzoil or Caltex Havoline 10W-30.

Thanks for that people. All good advice.

Took the new beast for a run over the weekend. On the punt over the river, 50km of dirt and gravel, then winding backroads along the coast to get home ... With a stop for lunch and to stock up on supplies at the vineyards.

Just a taste of things to come and a good start to the running-in period. Must get it into low range for a bit too. Roll on Friday!

Cheers all!
