Repacing Legacy engine

We noticed not long after purchasing the '03 Subaru Legacy she had some cold engine noise. Not in a panic especially when the engine did quiet down after warming up, but now its in the shop for a new engine (under warranty). I find it a bit baffling to think that some valve noise causes Subaru to have to replace the engine.

 

Any thoughts on this are welcome.

 

Perplexed in Peterborough

It's possible something was restricting oil passages, or that subaru might be disassembling it to verify there's not a problem with manufacturing.

 

I'd say, just be happy you got a new engine :)
