September 9, 200520 yr Hi, I would like to swap out the auto transmission in my brat to a manual D/R, either a 5 speed from an EA82, or a 4 speed from an EA81. How hard is it to swap pedal clusters out from auto to manual? Thanks Rick
September 9, 200520 yr Not too bad, if there is a computer under there its best to take it out, but other than that it just needs a bit of wriggling.
September 9, 200520 yr Author Thanks Ross, it's Carbbed, but I don't know if it has a computer or not. Rick
September 10, 200520 yr easiest thing to do is to pull the steering column to get it out with ease. I found it was the easiest thing to do on my RX when I swapped my auto to manual.
September 11, 200520 yr i agree with the steering column idea. makes easier to access the pedal assembly and the throttle cable
September 11, 200520 yr Author Yeah I think pulling the column would be easier in the long run as well. NOW comes another question....... What pedal clusters can I use??? Does it have to be from a Brat, or can it be from any EA81 manual?? Thanks much! Rick
September 11, 200520 yr i removed a pedal assembly without pulling the steering column...DUMB. don't try it unless you like lots of time getting no where and beating things, using foul language.....ha ha ha.....
September 11, 200520 yr Author That's funny, but I end up doing that anyway most of the time! Ha! Rick
September 11, 200520 yr All EA81's are the same from the dash forward - made em cheaper to produce. Even the doors on the Brat are the same as the coupe and hatch. Dome light, seats, carpet, ect... Minor differences under the car in the rear, and most of the changes are the bed and tailgate. Pedal cluster will be the same. I would go with the 80-82 style cluster as I prefer the bolt on clutch cable to the 83/84 style mounting with the clips. Make sure you get the right year of clutch cable to go with the assembly you use.
September 11, 200520 yr Author Thanks Subarunuts! I'll keep an eye out for the 80-82, worst case, I have to get an 83-84. Thanks Rick
