4 EAT problem - no power light

I recently purchased a 88 XT6 that's a FWD automatic with the 4-speed EAT . The power light for the transmission (the one on the dash) doesn't come on at all, even when starting car. The 1st gear hold-down button/light don't work either, and the car only seems to have 3rd gear when in 'D'. Any ideas on how I should approach this problem? Thanks for your help.
