September 26, 200520 yr Hello all just bought an 81 wagon with 127000 miles, ran ok for a few days, but when accelerating it would bog down like it wasn't getting any fuel, but if I acceleratded hard(floored it) it would make a clicking sound and rev up real high and would drive fast??? I gave it a tune up and new fuel filter and hasnt helped, I can tell there isn't much fuel getting to the filter, so i'm guessing that is a fuel pump issue, which brings me to my question Where is the fuel pump. any information or pictues you can tell/show me would be great. Thanks John
September 26, 200520 yr The pump is located on a shelf near the fuel tank. Your issue sounds more like a carb problem than a fuel pump. The pumps are only rated at 1.5 - 2.5 psi, so it may not seem like a whole lot of flow.
September 26, 200520 yr On an 81 its actually in the engine compartment most of the time. It will be near the wiper motor up in the corner of the engine compartment and be kindof square about 1.5" x 1.5" with a bracket mounting it and fuel lines running in & out with a 2 wire plug to it.

September 26, 200520 yr Definately sounds like a susspect pump to me as this is a similar thing mine was doing.And yes the pump is located near the wiper motor in the engine bay. Mike.
September 26, 200520 yr I would check to see if there are any external leaks comming from the carb. and then look to see if there are any internal leaks (take air filter top off and look down inside to see of there is an over abundance of fuel)
September 26, 200520 yr Another thing you might want to do is replace the other fuel filter. It is located right next to the fuel pump in front of the pasenger rear tire. This is commonly overlooked. I would replace that before you replace the fuel pump and see if that helps...that is if you haven't already replaced it.
September 27, 200520 yr Author thank you to all of you, I wasnt sure if that little box was the pump. I got a universal pump from napa today, but I wont get it in till tomorrow, I'll let you know if thats the problem, thanks again John
September 28, 200520 yr Author well Ive installed the pump, but now where do I wire it to. it needs to be shut off even if the key is in on position. and one more question, why are there three fuel lines from the tank? the small filter is on a smaller diameter line than the main line which I installed the pump on. thanks
