October 10, 200520 yr "96 OBW, 2.2L, 5 sp. I have a funny "clunk" sound coming from my front end, I only hear it when hitting a bump. I have inspected the suspension visually, nothing obvious that I can detect. Is it possible worn sway bar bushings can cause this? Are there any known trouble spots that might be related on the Legacy/Outback? Any help is appreciated.
October 10, 200520 yr Yeah I get this also, specifically when turning into a drive way where the road is a slight slope (as the suspension is moving). Seems mine does it when turning and the suspension is moving. I look forward to hearing if anyone else has found a solution.
October 10, 200520 yr Author Funny you shopuld mention the driveway, I have a steep driveway, it happens every time when I back out, seems worse with the wheel turned.
October 10, 200520 yr A search on "legacy clunk" will yield several discussions, and even a link to this: http://users.sisna.com/ignatius/subaru/tsb/04-09-01_tsb.pdf I posted that a while back, it's a TSB from Subaru regarding a "clunk" in the steering and suspension that sounds like what you're describing. My car does it big time, has for quite a while. I didn't attempt to get the TSB performed, doesn't sound like many other people have either. Another one of those endearing Subie quirks Steve
October 10, 200520 yr I have recently become somewhat interesested in performing this TSB, but have yet to find anyone who has personally performed it. I found a few replies on nasioc from folks who had the dealer perform it, but I am interested in details from some ShadeTrees who have attempted it. 1stsubaruparts.com shows this illustration (where #2 is the "COUPLING") Unfortunately I cannot confirm that this COUPLING matches the TSB COUPLING because the site accepts part numbers but does not display them. But I am still not 100% on the location of this part. Is this the coupling which can be seen in the middle of the column just above the inner CV joint? Looks like quite a job to remove/replace, but the TSB lists only 0.3 hours. Anyone have a service manual page that explains this procedure? 0.3 hours doesn't see TOO scary. Lots of questions, hopefully lots of answers. Thanks. -Heikki
