Can anyone tell me if the transmission from a '00 Forester S would be the same as a "98 Forester S? Can I just take one out and put the other in?

they are totally different part numbers in Subaru's system

 

does this mean they are compatible?

hmmmmm the different part numbers indicates that SOMETHING changed.

no way to confirm what that change was....

 

based on my experiences?

i'd say they are compatible .....

as we know that no MAJOR changes were made

appears that 98-2001 = all the same transmission

so these should very much be compatible
