November 14, 200520 yr Ok. my 92 Loyal 5 spd wagon does some funny stuff. It is really slow (no power)below 2000 RPM and once it gets above 2000 RPM it feels like the power kicks in. Also, once it's warmed up the idle cycles up and down, like rrrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr, (very precise I know). I've been told it's the EGR valve. Anybody care to second this opinion? How hard is the EGR valve to change on this car? Where is it located on the engine? Can I remove/clean/reinstall the existing one? Thanks in advance for your advice. Dave
November 14, 200520 yr That does sound like EGR symptoms. You can replace it easily, but you don't really need to. You can block it off by cutting a piece of a soup can big enough to block the port under the EGR tube. You won't miss it.
November 14, 200520 yr Another possibility - My 91 Loyale had those symptoms and it was the TPS. Is your CEL on, ECU showing codes?
November 14, 200520 yr I'd guess that it's the IAC - idle air control valve. Might help with the no power situation as well. Also, when was the last time you had a tune up? (plugs, wires, cap, rotor)? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=27893&highlight=idle+control+valve http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32704&highlight=idle+control+valve edit: if you do try to remove the IAC, I've had the best luck using vice grips to break loose the four bolts, then removing them by hand. There usually isn't enough room to get a screwdriver in there.
November 15, 200520 yr Author Thanks for all the responses. I will try blocking off the EGR valve and if that doesn't work, I will go from there. Thanks again!
