Erratic idle

Featured Replies

My 89 Dl with spfi has a problem with the idle, when I'm stopped and the motor is up to temperature The idle speed goes up and down and doesn't stay steady. It doesn't have a Tach so can't tell how many R's it changes. Any help for it?

Bob

generally, that is a problem with the O2 sensor, or a vacuum leak - the O2 sensor, and vacuum hose are cheap for the car, and given its age, it would be a good idea to consiter doing both - timing may be out of adjustment as well, use a timing light to adjust it, and you will see your idle improve

however in my expierence with SPFI, they tend to do that every now and then anyway

Good Luck!!

OT - OMG I hit 1k! I spend wayy too much time on this board .....

check the IAC valve as well. do a search on it. mucho info on it here.

Probably the IAC VALVE, located on the front of the (Carb) F.I., you will see a 3/4 black hose come from the air filter housing too it. Squirt some silicone based lubricant into the valve .... if don't have use WD-40.

That was what mine was doing as cold weather and gets gummy and it lags behind adjusting so give it a try and if it makes no difference, no harm done.
