1990-1994 Legacy vs. EA82 - new Qs

Featured Replies

So, if you're going down the freeway at 70mph, what is your RPM in a Legacy? Auto same as 5spd? ----- I hear about "limp mode"... sounds scary. What causes the car to do this and is hard to fix? And if the oppurtunity to get a RHD Legacy shows up, are they any different that LHD ones? Do Leg's eat axles? Is the AWD full time, or is it sometimes 100% FWD? Tell me everything, I must know!

Gl's to DL's = dual headlights. Other than that, mechanically identical.

My vote? Legacy. You won't miss adding 50% more horsepower over the EA82's. More refined interior, less road noise. auto's aren't bad, though I snapped the shift cable on one of them doing lots of reverse-rev in neutral, drop in drive, back to nuetral revving and drop in reverse rocking of one stuck in a mudhole with only 3 cyls, so I don't trust the shift linkages as much. I have heard external oil coolars can help.

Electrics wise, legacy's are more complicated. It seems just as reliable though. And the radio is nicer, as well as being a standard size and wiring if you want to replace it with aftermarket.

Once you go offroad, you will find that in a legacy momentum/power and body damage make up for gears and clearance. The capability is impressive if you really don't care. I'm stripping the wiring harness apart on mine for my EJ22 swap and sand is packed in in mysterious places.

Whoops, accidentally replaced my original questions.. EA82 vs EJ22 - what kind of things commonly go wrong with the EJ22? Are 90-94 Legacy auto trans any good? RPM? gas milage? Are Legacys prone to electronic failure?

Right hand drive legacys, often postal legacys have a 2L motor in them often. It has some parts, mostly ignition, that are unique and are hard to get(they have to be imported and you will b e charged body parts. So check the engine size and configuration before you buy one. Limp mode is a good thing, it's when a sensor goes bad and the computer puts the check engine lite on and substitutes a value. I have seen a legacy in "limp mode" haul past me while i was holding 90, so they do not really limp.

Auto's generally hold lower rpms on the highway, the final reduction is not as high. both can come with cruize controll.
