I have done a little homework shopping for my next Subaru, but I wanted to get an outside opinion on price. A couple of dealers in Arizona have 05 OBW XT left over (premium package no navigation). If it is a clearance price what should it be? I know that list for the few I saw were between 33k-35k. Thanks

I imagine nobody has been shopping there. you might try Kelly blue book or Nasioc and see if you can find a matchup.

You can pull the dealer cost (invoice) right off of www.autobytel.com or a comparable site. You should pay below the dealer cost if its an 05 and they're "clearancing" the car, not including any rebates (a lovely dealer trick). Remember, just because you get their car at less than it cost them doesn't mean they're not making something. Factories have something called "holdbacks" where basically, they give a dealer money back after they sell a car. With imported cas thats usually around 3%. Also don't let them add on one single other charge (another lovely dealer trick). A good example of this is "window etching" for 250.00 when it cost them about ten bucks. Another is charging you to detail the new car. What new cars need detailing? Please. The whole process shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. Usually a good technique is to figure out exactly what you are going to pay, walk in, give them that number (always ask for the sales manager thereby eliminating the need for someone to walk back and forth between you and the sales manager) and if they say "no, but how..." interrupt and ask if they have a hearing problem, and walk away. If they insist on haggling, tell them "look, you have 30 minutes to sell me that car for the price I gave you, and you just wasted 15 of them. 15 left, get going."
