I have a 93 legacy wagon AWD. Was driving down the road and all of a sudden is was like the car was in neutral. No reverse, no anything. I towed it home and let it sit for a few days. Started it back up and it drives around the driveway for about 3 minutes in forward or reverse and then bam, same thing happens no gears at all. It seems to work until it either gets too hot or holds no pressure. If anyone could give me some insight, that would be great.

What is the condition of the transmission fluid?

 

It could be that it's so contaminated, that the internal screen is getting plugged up, as it runs and fluid circulates. When you shut it off, fluid comes back down and back flushes the screen.

 

You can try replacing the fluid. It may or may not work. Either way, I wouldn't expect much more life out of the tranny without a rebuild.
