This thing is STILL overheating, runs about 210

and I would like it better if it ran at 175 to 185

I know that Airflow management looks pretty dismal overall

But can anybody guess if an oil cooler will help my problem ?

 

I will be checking thermostat and trying to get better airflow

this week.

Planning a 1000 mile trip in June and would like to not have to worry about overheating.

Hey Don, I noticed a few things...

 

I see you posted these pics back in 2003 - so you mean to say it has alwaysed over heated....

 

And it is hard to tell in the pics - but is the radiator the original one that came with the engine and trans set-up - or is it a smaller one... looks small to me...

 

Any ways I see a few things I would of done differently - from the beginning - only for extra measures or a peace of mind..

 

1) looks as if lots of hot air can get trapped under that firbeglass body.. - I see no air intake vents - to help air flow over the radiator and or engine - to help cool things down.

 

2) I change the coolant fan set-up...

 

If I were in your shoes and it did over heat - depending on how I sat in the seat - I might look into placing a vent over my head to force air down and over the engine past the radiator and out the back.

 

I will try to check back asap to see if any more updates..

Hi Don This is Jerry, i look at your pictures of your trike. 2 things i see will help you on cooling 1 is the exhuast move it to the under side of the bike. It is so close to the radiator the heat that the muffler gives off gose into the radiator thats not helping the cooling. #2 the radiator is not a subie and it is a up and down flowing the cross flow radiators cool better. Change those 2 things and i think it will solve your problem. Thanks Jerry

I too am building a subaru trike with an older 1800 with a 2 wheel drive automatic. A mazda rotary radiator ius ideal for cooling up to 190 hp. if installed correctly. I know if you are talented enough to fabricate a trike you'll whup this prob quickly. IS THE AIR ALL FLOWING IN ONE DIRECTION ? with no or little obstruction ? The fan should PULL, i would think the way you have it configured. Maybe another fan beside it ? lo.

abets a luck and I wouild like to see mnore pics, differant angles and so forth

Hi Don,

I agree with the other guys on venting and muffler mods,I do not think an oil cooler will work unless you canput some air around it.

You might be able to add a motorcycle radiator as a pre-cooler to the front of the trike in addition to what you have.

Also a clear photo of the rear of trike with the body on might help us help you
