How to in stall clutch???

Featured Replies

Iam putting in a clutch and was wondering what side of the clutch to put toward the presure plate, the flat side or the spring stiking out side?? Does any one have a diagram of how to install a clutch the haynes manule sucks!

toward the pressure plate. Do you have an alignement tool?

the alignment of the clutch disc is critical when you install the engine.

If it is not centered exactly you will be unable to pull the engine and transmission together without damage.

I found the best alignment tools where made when I pulled the mainshaft from an old transmission.

The adjustable tools with little spacers are a pain in the butt and not that accurate.

Last time I bought a clutch it came with a little plastic alignment tool.

yeah i just ahve this plastic pice that you slid into the through out bearing, and then slide the clutch over.

Don't mean to interrupt, but how much are clutches going for??? (93 Impreza)

Just curious.

Josh!

if you dont have a centering tool, install the pressure plate with the bolts loose, but tight enough to keep the clutch disc from sliding around, but loose enough to position it by hand. as the motor goes against the transmission, the clutch will center itself.

withthe starter removed, you can tighten the pressure plate bolts thru the starter hole

Let me first qualify my answer...I've never installed a Subaru clutch, but have installed hundreds of clutches in vehicles in my years as a mechanic. Typically, if you hold the clutch disc against the flywheel by hand and rotate it, it will have interference on one side of the disc (usually the side the dampening springs), but not the other. Obviously, it must rotate without interference or the clutch won't release when the pedal is depressed. It's generally a good idea to resurface the flywheel when replacing the clutch; often times you must put a shim between the crankshaft and the flywheel equal to the amount ground off the flywheel surface (this will keep the clutch release arm at the correct angle). Your machine shop can advise you about this. Additionally, now's the time to replace both the pilot bushing and throwout bearing. Make sure the clutch disc, flywheel, and pressure plate are free from any grease. Ensure the throwout bearing slides freely on the transmission input shaft bearing collar and put a LIGHT film of grease inside the bearing. Take your time and professional results can be obtained.
