I am just starting my first conversion and am assembling the pieces. I have a clutch question. Most my questions will be very simple so please stay with me....

 

My NOS 2.2l engine has a brand new clutch installed on it. I assume that the clutch is matched to the engine. What I am try to determine is this - do I need to purchase a new clutch or is the one on the engine OK to use? I have a KEP adapter plate and flywheel on order.

 

I know the clutch in my Westy is tired with 135k miles on it. I will purchase a new heavy duty VW clutch if this one on the Subaru engine will not work.

 

I am attempting to attached is a picture of the clutch. Any thoughts?

You need a VW clutch and Kennedy's flywheel. The clutch is required because the splines on the clutch slide onto the tranny and the Soob one won't slide on.

 

But while you are waiting....pull the flywheel and clutch off the Subaru engine and inspect the rear main seal and most importantly the breather plate on the back of the engine. If its plastic go to the dealer and spend the $20 for a metal one and RTV it on.

I pulled the pressure plate, clutch, and fly wheel. Seal looks perfect. The engine has two access points behind the flywheel, both with metal covers. One is large (right side while facing it) and one is small (left side). What are these called and what are they used for?

 

I have the Chilton manual for the Subaru but it is woefully inadequate and has not parts diagrams. I am trying to familiarize myself with this engine... Is there anything better out there?

Those are the breather plate and access holes for the wrist pins. Shouldnt need anything done to them either.

 

If you can afford it buy the genuine Subaru manuals from the dealership or on CDROM thru Ebay as well as lots of other suppliers. The Haynes book is slightly better than the Chiltons is...the worst book available but still better than nothing.
