Glad to see he's finding parts for it. I just saw this thread for the first time and thought about the first Honda cars, the N600. They had a 600cc motor too and I wondered if they could have been the same. It might be worth looking under the hood if you ever run across one of them. Here's a link to the car...

I believe the Honda 600 was an air cooled engine where as the Subaru 2 cylinder was water cooled. this should be a pic of what it looks like:

that look like to my rex, but the color is diferent
my dad said the justy engine wont fit   and the brakes pumps on wheels are rusty he will take out and search anothers

Here is a picture of an early 1988 Justy. Compare it with the orange Sherpa above.

 

 

the justy engine has 1 more cylinder than the rex engine, and is imposible to fit on the rex.

people that own subaru rex here do not sell them for any thing, becuase are considered as precius gems that work with the gasoline odor so is imposible to find another rex to take the parts for mine. dad says that the only chance is to use parts from other tiny car

nice new rex but my model is older (1981) and just 2 cilinders . do you believe that the new rex 4 cil. motor could fit on the old rex bay ??

now dad is thinking about the daihatsu cuore engine and trans swap, the daihatsu cuore is smaller than rex.

no luck findin a replacement motor and the subaru honduras dealer sucks. no help from them to find parts.

Carmen, It has been sooo long. You are VERY patient. Iam pretty sure that a engine and transmission from a Subaru VIVIO will fit in your narrow little car. It is a 4 cylinder but it only displaces 660cc. Subaru calls it a EN07 and it comes in either a single overhead cam naturally aspirated or with Dual overhead cams and a Supercharger in the Vivio RXR. POWER or Economy, Your Choice. A similer version of this engine will be used in the Subarus that have the engines in the back,like the Vans and mini pick ups.
