87 wagon overhead cam.does this engine have hydraulic lifters .it ran quiet and then was parked for a long time.whenrestarted it sounds like every valve is loose.any info would be helpful thanks

yes, that engine does have hydraulic lifters.. so if it sat for a very long time it may just need to be run for a few hundred miles to get them "pumped up" the ticking won't hurt the engine at all though..

 

the other posibility is that the seals in the oil pump have dried up, and its sucking air into the oil, not letting the lifters "pump up"

 

personally i would change the oil, and drive it for a few hundred miles before resealing the oil pump.. my guess it would prolly be fine.

i found a 91 wagon in a barn recently....

towed it home, fired it up and it had a valve TIC TIC TIC...

 

 

poured a quart of ATF in there, let it idle for half an hour

and now its as quiet as new.

 

 

never got a lifter tic to go away before,

i think the MMO/Seafoam/ATF approach is certainly worth a try, worked for me.

we did the heads on a turbo motor. got it running from being a deadbeat car.

it ticked rather loud when it first started, but the noise went away completely after she warmed up.

 

sometimes soobs will do that, its normal as far as what to expect, and its not really a machanical issue, but more of a convenience/annoyance issue.

 

if the car has sat, drive it around and put a few miles on it before you come to your final conclusions
