Guest Strakes
I read earlier about a snorkelectomy on this post. So, I performed a snorkelectomy this weekend on our 1993 legacy...and it made a noticeable difference. It has better acceleration, will pull/stay in a lower gear longer, and etc. It was a great recommendation. This leads me to my 2002 Legacy GT. I've observed all the large and small plastic growths/appendages/boxes hanging, protruding, and attached along the plastic pipe from the intake in the front by the radiator to the airfilter box. Anyone performed a "tumor-ectomy" to late models Subarus? Any info would be great. Thanks!
Guest bill rigsby
I also did one was a good cheap improvement. I always wondered what the 8" X 1" plastic "handle" coming off the intake tube was, Any ideas? Bill

Guest meep424
it's a resonator-- a tuned pipe. either there to kill noise and/or lessen turbulence in the plenum. mike
Guest Hikerwa
I recently removed the large airbox inside the fender well (2002 OB wagon), and sealed the hole leading to it. It seems to have made the car a bit louder (not obtrusive) and it seems to have a little extra oomph (although amybe not). Is there any reason to keep all of the resonator pockets, or could I replace all of the stock duct work with straight piping or tubing? I guess it's no big deal, but I would like an even throatier sound, and perhaps some easier breathing.
Guest uhohru
AEM offers an intake setup thats bolt on, and connects with 3 hoses. Youll find them for approx 175$ It eliminates the entire airbox assembly and leaves you with a neater, more efficient breathing system. Guest iamabus
What is a Snorkel-ectomy? I have a 98 Legacy GT 2.
Guest FlyStyle
its when you remove the factory "silencer" from the fender well.. done it a long long time ago... and to tell you the truth the fun factor is all your getting. the wot throttle, as well as the midrange growl is the biggest noticement... Guest Setright
I have experimented with a number of different solutions, and reckon I have found the best one: www.geocities.com/vik2r/Sube/intake2.jpg K&N element in the standard filter box. Standard pipe into the fender is sawed of just after it turns downward. Attached to it's end is carburator velocity stack that I bought at a motorbike shop. It is imperative that air is drawn in from the fender cavity, since it is cooler, therefore more dense...blah..blah..blah... Okay, power gains are always going to be debatable. Needs a turbo to do anything serious, but I would pass a "Pepsi Challenge" on the throttle response. The sound is deep chested, big lung, but not overtly obtrusive, and it sounds smooth. Not the uncultered BARP from removing the snorkel completely. I reckon the velocity stack plays an important role both for throttle response and sound. At high revs (4000+) the sound is very "race car" in character....hey, that reminds me, it must be time for a drive!!
