My 99 OBW makes a bit of noise. It sounds more like valves than the infamous piston slap. I have gotten different stories as to which years need the valves adjusted.

 

If my 99 needs them adjusted is this a home mechanic job or should it just go to a shop? Cost?

It's a shop type job , you need a special tool to get the shims in and out as well as an assortment of shims

Basically any Subaru 1997 up has adjustable valves
