How many people here have installed a Full Time 4wd 5-speed tranny into a car not originally equiped with such, then had to wire in the diff lock to get it to work? I'm currently slaving away at my schematics I have getting it all to work, however, I remembered that I have a now black center console and no room for the switch. So I decided to relocate the switch to another spot, plus it makes wiring the diff lock a lot of feet in wires less...

 

Here's where its going to be making its new home into the dash of my coupe.

Next, I'm putting in the matching RX instrument cluster into my coupe as well but apon further inspection, the two main plugs on top of the cluster are wired different for auto and manual. So I just "made" a couple plugs by swapping the pins around in them, then I'm going to hack off the old plugs one wire at a time and solder them onto where they should be going. These two plugs are for the indicator lights in the center of a GL analoge cluster (ie: doors, hatch, diff lock, "LOW", rear defrost, seatbelt, etc.). Its not as bad as one might think it is, just very time consuming.

Looks like a nice place to have the switch. Because I'm in australia and all our FT boxes are imports I had to make do with a DPDT rocker switch and some LED's with resistors.

Thats basically in the same spot as our diff lock switches. I wasn't about to chop up a nice black console to put it in there since I will be putting an EJ box in when I do the EJ20G swap into the car. This will work for now and make it easily removable from the car. I'm going to make the harness its own for the most part so it'll work in any Subaru with a locking center diff.

How about wiring it through a part time 4wd switch? Both are the same type off SP/DT no off switch. The diff lock switch just has 2 extra wires for illumination of the switch and those can be ignored for this purpose. I'll bet you've got a Part time shifter assembly sittin around right? The solenoids for diff lock are the same as the ones for part time shifting, and use the same connector in harness(F96) This would accomplish the switching action. For illuminating an indicator, the diff lock Ill. switch, mounted on trans, can be plugged right into the harness wherte the 4wd indicator switch plugs in. FSM shows them as the same connector(e24). Then you're 4wd or diff lock light will illuminate depending on which cluster you use.

 

If you are swapping into a S/R PT4wd car it should be EEEEEAASY. If Car was originally D/R, you'll have to add wiring for the solenioids and light switch. But solenoid can all be got from a S/R PT4wd

Unfortunatly, none of that is going to be very easy. I'm swapping all of it into an '87 FWD auto coupe:rolleyes:

 

I have found some solenoids from a manual RX and those will be going into the stock location but IIRC, there's no plug for them either. So I'm going to make a few connectors so the system can be easily removed from the car.

You could still scavenge all you need as far as a shifter with pushbutton 4wd switch and use it as your diff lock switch. Grab all body harness too pigtails to plug all your solenoids, D.Lock (4wd)switch, Diff lock indicator switch(on trans), etc into. Wire you're stand alone setup with that, so it can all go into something else(crawler) later.

 

In a similar but less complicated swap, I just recently relocated my "1 hold" switch on my 4EAT GL. I used a shifter and button from a PT 4wd 3spd. It's great to have those essential shifting buttons ON THE SHIFTER. Funny how that works. No more grabbin second only to abrubltly get first.

well I like the little switch. Besides, my shifters are custom made up. Short throws FTW! That and I have this nice STi shift knob that I really don't wanna put away:-p

 

I have a lot of connectors since I've been stripping my RX. Found a good use for some of them and found some that I needed to repin for the cluster and such.
