Guest dormat925
I get to do some tweaking on my 96 Outback. My wifes stipulation is its not loud when I get done, and It won't wreck gas mileage. So I was thinking a couple things I might do is a MSD ignition the MSD 6300 or the MSD 6320. I am not racing this thing I just want it to be a little quicker. Do I need the rev control on it? Anyone with expierience with this let me know. Is there a high performance coil out there that might give me more performance mine probably be replaced anyway? I want to get high performance wires and better plugs any suggestions? I was also thinking the Perrin Pulley its the same size as factory only 4lbs. lighter. <img src="http://www.rallitek.com/Pictures/PP217.jpg" style="border:0;"/> I might even get a little better gas mileage when I get done with this stuff!!! Any other suggestions let me know.
Guest Chip Hedrick
I'm about to start modding my '98 OBW. I just bought a lightweight (not an underdrive) pulley from Mr. Josh's Total Performance (tpi.mrjosh43.com/home.html). $95.00 incl. shipping v. $139.99 for the Perrin Pulley. The weight is the same 1.19 (Mr. Josh's) v. 1.2 (Perrin). I haven't installed it yet. It's sitting in a box next to my desk, but it appears to be of good quality. I've heard that copper tip spark plugs may give a slight performance increase over platinum plugs (if those are what you're currently using), but need to be changed more frequently. It's a dirt cheap mod, and doubtlessly worth trying (it's on my to do list). Also, I run a K&N panel filter. Minimal noise increase and slight performance increase. Some people bash these as allegedly not offering the same filtering capacity as paper filters, but I strongly suspect that is not an issue unless you drive in dusty conditions or go many miles between oil changes. Cams or nitrous may be an option, but you'd probably need to modify your exhaust system to realize full gains (and that could violate your wife's noise requirements). Of course, there are headers, high flow cats, and performance mufflers, all of which are readily available on the net, but, again you run into the noise issue. Maybe a high flow cat and a conservative perfomance muffler wouldn't offend your wife too much. Maybe someone with those mods could weigh in on the noise issue. Guest Legacy777
If you want to do ignition, you need to use the MSD Dis-2 ignition, since that's the type of ignition we have. Pullies will add a little.
Guest dormat925
Thanks for the correct part on the MSD. Who has installed MSD DIS-2 on there Soobs and what kind of results have you had? I had thought about the air intakes and K & N filters however I drive on enough gravel to think I am going to avoid this. I might modify my airbox to get more cold air to the engine and I read about insulating the stock plumbing which I think I will do as well. I think I am going to get the lightened crank pulley from total performance imports $95 bucks is a great deal. Any other suggestions? Is there a better coil out there? Guest Legacy777
I've installed the Dis-2 unit. I was actually pretty impressed with the results. low-mid range power/throttle response was better/quicker, and gas mileage improved. These ignitions seem to provide the best results on the older gen subies. The newer imprezas and the like doen't seem to benefit much from these. If you're going to do this ignition check to see what coil pack you have. There were two kinds, the hitachi one and the diamond coil pack. The diamond one was mostly found on MT cars. The diamond coil pack has been said to be able to handle a little more juice. I have no empirical data to back that up though.... I've got a pic of the diamond coil pack on my site under the pics section.
Guest dormat925
I have the diamond coil. I am thinking from the reply I have gotten to not get the ignition amplifier. Instead to get a performance chip any good or bad expeiriences on one. Will this hurt mileage under normal driving conditions. I am also going to do the snorkelectomy and the lighter pulley
Guest Legacy777
I've run both, for your car, get the ignition. I have a torque 2 chip, and while it did make a difference for a little more power, I just wasn't happy with the gas mileage nor how the car felt. When you go adding more fuel to the a/f mixture you take away some of the peakiness, it feels more smooth. Like I said, my recommendation would be for the ignition. Guest dormat925
thanks Josh, I had talked to a few people who thought subarus had enough spark and that no one added those to the subarus However I don't see how it could hurt. more spark =better performance. I am leary about the chips anyway because of the poor fuel economy.
Guest Legacy777
Well.....actually I thought you had a first gen legacy....which I know the MSD does improve things. I just saw you have 96 MY. I have no first hand experience with the second gen legacies, their ignition system may be better then the first gen's. Just don't want you to spend the money and not have it do anything worthwhile. You may want to ask on the legacy forum on nasioc. Someone in there may or may not have done it www.nasioc.com
