Transmission seal question

Featured Replies

This question is for anyone who know's....How do you get the front main transmission seal out to replace it on a 1985 Subaru Brat 4WD.

I swapped out the old transmission with another used one. I wanted to put new seals in the transmission I was putting in. Forgive me if I missed something in the Chiltons or Hynes manuals, but I didn't see any details on that. I thought it would be easy....I removed 3 or 4 bolts from a plate that is around the front spline and figured it would slip right off and the seal would be behind that, but I couldn't get that plate off, something was still hold it on. In my transmission swap I ultimately skipped replacing the front seal, and replaced the others that I could, and luckily (so far) it is leak free. I would still like to know how to do this in case I need to replace it in the future. Thanks!
