This is a 1993 Impreza with the 1.8l engine. When the car is shutoff and the engine is hot, shortly there after is started up again the engine will stall unless I rev it several times then it will idle OK. Also when the car has been driven and the engine is hot it will sometimes stall at a stop sign (again wont idle correctly). When engine is cold and running the car idles fine. I replaced the coolant temp. sensor and changed plugs and wires but that didn't help. Has anybody else had this problem and fixed it??? I need your help.

Any other symptoms? Could be MAF, O2 sensor, cam,crank knock sensor, canistor purge solenoid, tps. Any other driveability symptoms? The codes will likely point to the answer. Keep us posted.

Have you recently ;

1. moved to a hotter location"

 

2. worked on or altered the fuel system?

 

3. moved to a place that has 'gasohol'?

 

I'm thinking maybe vapor lock. perhaps others here will know if is ever an issue with Subarus. My old '78 Civic would vapor lock with symptoms like your every summer - I carried a jug of water to pour on the fuel pump (mechanical) when the problem/conditions came up.

Look in the radiator after removing the filler cap. Are the tubes, assuming you can see them, all ruddy & cruddy?

R&R radiator to a rebuild shop if they are. Are you using and EXACT 50-50% coolant mix? Too much ante-freeze makes 'em run hot. Are your fans cycling properly? Is the radiator packed SOLID with bugs? Look in the front of the rad while someone else hold a droplight on the engine side. Remove thermostat & test in a pan of water on the stove with a thermometer. It SHOULD start to open at the temp stamper in the little copper thingy in the center. Replace if it does not open at that temp with a genuine SUBARU thermostat: Aftermarket thermostats are NOT to be trusted anymore. Truth is have the new thermostat before you remove the old one, 'cause it is so much trouble to start with, you might as well replace it anyway. Ten years...it is time.

I had the same problem with my 93 Impreza. Cleaned the IAC with cleaner. Wiped town throotle body. Havn't had a problem since. Cheap fix too! :headbang:
