November 8, 200718 yr i have an 01 with the 2.5 and my brother has an 08 with the 2.5 and noticed they call for different oil filters. so after doing some research 04 and up calls for one number and 03 and below is a different number. so i'm wondering if subaru changed something in the engine design in that time or did they just come out with a newer updated filter (such as an anti drain back valve for ex.) that could be used on my older model if it was infact just improved in some way...anyone else notice this?
November 8, 200718 yr well, the two engines you have mentioned are different in some ways. i would use the oil filter that was made for your year engine.
November 15, 200718 yr I'm 99% sure that they now use an updated oil filter for the turbo and NA 2.5's from at least '00 to '08 (not sure about STI). You could always check with a dealer parts dept, some of them are helpful. Last time I got filters the part number ended in AA100. November 15, 200718 yr Author well, the stp filter (which i am no longer using) listed the same for my 98 as the 01, and through 03, than a diff. part number for 04 and up. (the 04 and up filter was smaller in diameter) i since when to napa and got a napa gold filter (very nice) and they list the same part number from my 98 through the 08....and this is of the smaller diameter also of the 04 and up stp...i dunno.....they both interchange with each other...just thought it was a little strange....
November 15, 200718 yr Ah, I assumed you were referring to the OEM filter. OEM back story: They use to have two different filters larger diameter NA filter and smaller diameter turbo filter. Must be around '04 that the dropped the larger NA filter and use the turbo filter for all (or most) motors. From what I've read they are pretty much equivalent. The smaller diameter OEM's have the same or more filter area. I'm guessing STP just kept up with both product lines. I think some other makes/models use these filters. Either filter will work fine for a NA car.
