would a coolant temp sensor malfunction cause the engine to idle fine then drop off and for a half second then idle fine and repeat this randomly, i have been having this problem for a week, have checked all the simple things to no avail..thanks

So the idle is surging up and down? Sounds more like the idle air control valve (IAC) than the coolant sensor.

 

Some searches will show where it is and how to clean it :) It's a pretty common problem.
