Guest Brettm57
I'm getting ready to change the cam belt on a '90 Legacy. How much of a job is it to pull the front pulley to get the cam cover off? Are they a struggle or do they come off relatively easy? Thanks.
Guest intrigueing
Once you get the bolt off the pulley usually just slides off easily. I was replacing the drive belts, so I just used the old belt and a small pipe to keep the pulley from spinning.
Guest giboufou
You can also use gear clamps around the pulley to give yourself a leverage point.
Guest Legacy777
Do you have an auto or manual transmission? If you have a manual, have someone get in the car, put it in 5th gear and stand on the brakes while you loosen the crank bolt. if you have an auto, there is a little plastic plug on the top passenger side of the bell housing for the automatic. With this removed you can stick a big prybar or something down in there to catch the backside of the torque converter and keep the motor from turning over. My pulley didn't come off nice and easily. It eventually came off, but took some persuasion.
Guest Legacy777
also, make sure you torque that crank bolt to 110-130 ft/lbs of torque.
Guest subyluvr2212
Mine came off the moment I pulled the bolt out. Fell right in my hand. Yes, be triple-sure that you torque it down enough when you put it back on. Some of us on the Legacy BBS have ruined engines because a loose pulley chewed up the crank... Guest Brettm57
I was "shocked and awed" when the pulley just fell off in my hand! This was my first Suby cam belt change, and I'm happy to report that everything went fine. I got the engine all back in, the transmission doesn't leak oil any more, I'm a happy man! I'm glad you guys listed the pulley bolt torque, my manual said something like 65 ft. lbs. I'll have to write the proper torque in my book. Once again, the BBS members come through! Guest Frag
I dont see the relation between cam belt change and trans not leaking oil any more... Could you give us some more details ? Just curious.
Guest Brettm57
I don't get it either, I change the cam belt and the transmission stopped leaking oil?!! wtf? Well... ya see what is was.... I had to pull the engine to replace the transmission oil seal behind the converter, which was leaking, and after I got the engine back in the car, I decided that this would be an excellent time to replace the cam belt as long as I already had the radiator and stuff out of the way. So I kind of rolled it all into the same job. Anyhow, this was my first undertaking of a job this big on a Sube. The humorous part of this whole job is my brother gave me this car because his local mechanic convinced him that the transmission was junk and couldn't be fixed. I told him I didn't think so but he wouldn't believe me. So far I've got $78.00 total invested in this car. Pretty cheap transportation! Guest synapse79
if you have an impact you can zip the bolt off without holding anything... When i did mine, I cant remember what i torqued mine too... Lets hope it holds... Id like to think i would have realized what was in the book was too light...
Guest synapse79
forgot to mention... a buddy of mine was working on a legacy that some lady had been driving with the crank pully slipping. She drove it til it couldnt turn the alternator fast enough to keep the car running. Im not sure how the motor turned out, he had just replaced the pully and showed me the chowed one...
