just bought a 98 outback that has had an engine out of a 2000 put into it runs great but there is a loud tick in the engine that is from startup to accelerating hot or cold

 

didnt know if it was somthing that was done during engine transfer or what

I moved your post over to this forum, its more appropriate here.

 

What you have there is piston slap, unfortunately pretty common and if it goes away in 5 minutes of running its nothing too terrible to worry about.
