A pretty damn good fit, and way stronger than the early 90's rack and more compatable with aftermarket rack/basket systems. This car had no rack at first. We removed the headliner and then marked and drilled holes for the mounting studs. Some butyl sealant around the holes and a few fender washers and it was done. junejuly2008198.jpg

This car also had big dents in the roof from a clamp on style rack that had been on it, and most likely overloaded. So we took the opportunity to work the metal out a bit, but we didn't want to repaint so we didn't fully smooth it or do filer. you can see it form this angle junejuly2008201.jpg

Oh, yeah, and here is the whole car. junejuly2008276.jpg

Looks great.

A how-to would be nice. I have a 98 Wagon with no rack and want one. How did you determine where to located it? How is it attached?

It's bolted through the roof.

To install, we removed the headliner. Then placed the rack ontop of the car and did some centering, measuring, and eyeballing till it was in the right spot.

Then we lightly wacked each mounting point down into the roof. The rack has studs on the bottom for mounting, so the studs on the rack made a divet each spot were a hole needed to be.

Then drilled holes, bolted in the rack with big fender washers from underneath. Also We used a very gooey butyl acetate sealant under the *feet* of the rack, around the holes to prevent leaks.

reinstall the headliner.
