Just bought 2000 Impreza Wagon, VIN NUMBER LOCATIONS??

Featured Replies

I need to match the engine/transmission VIN numbers to the rest of the car. Can anyone tell me where the VIN number is located on both the tranny as well as the engine?

Long story short, I bought the car from this Romanian dude who seemed like he was holding back - started finding a bunch of weird things with the car cosmetically. All the wiring under the hood looks like it's been done by ... well, lets just say it is not factory. Checked DMV records and it looks like he bought it from a Russian (..not that that means anything..... ..., but seriously./)

Anyways, help me out - I'll appreciate it. and because of your help I will give you this:

your cars vin number isn't on the engine or tranny. they have engine numbers and trans numbers the coorlate (SP?) with the vin. why didnt you do this before you bought the car?

In what way do they correlate? ..The impreza wagon was selling for 3,800 and it was too goo a deal to pass up.

Thanks for the... infoh(SP?)

I don't think you can match a particular engine or tranny to a specific car. I think what svxpert is referring to is that a vin will often indicate an engine size/type and tranny type.

Try calling Subaru of America, they might be able to help you identify stuff.

Thank you, that's a good idea.

I am used to owning BMWs, and there is a vin on dash/ door jam/ chassis, engine, tranny, diff, and other places also..

I will give Sub a call, I just figured people here would have this info-

Hey, not to sound insulting but, I own a 2000 Impreza wagon does anyone know of other forums that have a large group of sub peeps?

The vin is stamped onto the side of the shortblock itself but if its been warrantied in the past or anything it wont match.

If the car runs good and looks ok whats the big deal really? A good running Subaru impreza under 4000 is a steal right now.

That's a good point. As long as the DMV didn't balk at your title, and vin matches what's on the title, then you're golden.

Nah, it looks like a lot of the wiring has been done outside of the factory, so I am assuming engine swap - Car runs like a champ, there are some dings here and there on the exterior but that doesn't bother me at all.

Anyways - I called Subaru tech and they said the numbers on engine/tranny/transfer case and so forth are production numbers, They don't match and are not coordinated with the VIN number. This seems weird to me, but maybe I am just used to other cars.

Thanks guys:grin:

Got any photos of what you think was swapped out?

I started driving a 99 Impreza Outback Sport wagon this past May and LOVE IT. Very fun little cars. Geez, that thing eats up curvy roads. I also junked out a 2000 OBS wagon, so I have a little experience seeing the guts of these cars.

You might want to check out www.rs25, as there are a lot of Impreza owners there and a lot of non-turbo guys.
