I have a quick question about an engine swap I need to do. I am new to Subaru's but not to turning wrenches. the engine in my 1998 Legacy Outback (2.5 liter and 5 speed) just took a dump and I would like to replace it with a good used engine. I am located in a pretty remote part of Alaska and I dont have alot to choose from. It just so happens that someone in my town has a wrecked 2005 wagon with a 2.5 with 24,000 miles on it. I am pretty sure that the fuel injection and alot of the electronics will not match up but I am wanting to know if I can use the Long block portion and bolt my intake and electronics up to it?

 

If anyone can give me a little advice on this that would be great.

you are correct, this is not a direct swap. and the intake manifolds are not interchangeable.

 

the one way you could get it to work would be to swap the intake wiring harness from the 1998 onto the 2004 engine intake manifold. that's not terribly difficult, i'm just talking about the intake stuff, that's all.

 

the sucky part is that i think the cam triggers are different. there's a chance it'll work but the differences aren't clear to me so i can't speak to exactly how it would be done or if it would work for you. but i'm pretty sure this i the only hang up to the whole deal.

 

for instance i think the cams triggers are positioned differently (but i could be wrong). there's a possibility they aren't different and this is all a wash. or there's a possibility that you can just swap the necessary cams (the ones with triggers since your 1998 will have 4 cam sprockets and the 2004 will only have 2). then there's the possibility that it won't work at all.

 

that will be your only hang up if you can handle the engine harness swap.

 

the other option would be to bolt the 1998 heads and intake onto the 2004 block. but that would suck disassembling a perfectly good 2004 block.

If it has the older cam pickup design (6 and 7) on the new motor that isnt an issue.

 

If it has EGR you will need both to and even harder is making that system not throw cel's.

 

Youd be better off fixing it with a stock engine even maybe shipping one in from CCR or a JDM supplier.

Thanks for the help guys. I would love to purchase one of those JDM engines but the shipping to my neck of the woods makes it cost nearly as much as the engine.
