96 obw - airbags replacement questions

hi. appreciate anyone's response here...airbags deployed in minor collision..bought used airbags (driver/pass), controller, roller assembly, and both impact sensors at front end (all from same car/never deployed) ...found a mechanic who will do the swap job for what he says may be a half day's work ..mechanic tells me that once components are swapped out and car is turned on and airbag computer doesnt find any problems airbag light should go out...my questions are as follows:

 

1) Is it true about the self test and the airbag light then going off upon successful test ?(ive gotten different answers from people regarding having to have the dealer clear them)

 

2) Is the airbag computer able to know (test) functionality of all system components - roller assembly(clock spring), modules and even crash sensors in front end?

 

ive read that not all components necessarily need to be replaced, and id like to minimize his work...ive already removed both bag modules, but not roller assembly..so im wondering if it makes sense to have a conversation with him about turning the car on to self-test at various stages in his work to see if he can stop at a certain point with success...i.e, install bag modules only, then test...if bad, then swap roller assembly, then retest, etc...all the way to impact sensors...or, does interfacing the airbag computer tell you a complete list of things bad?

I'm pretty sure the airbag light should go off if the airbag computer does a diagnostic and everything is ok.

 

As for the various sensors. Without knowing the type of impact sensor, it'd be hard to say for sure whether you need to replace them. This page has some good info on the various type of sensors.

You may want to call a local subaru dealership and see if they may be able to tell you the type of sensor and/or whether the sensors should be replaced.
