86 fuel pump relay

Featured Replies

hey, i got an 86 gl 4wd wagon w a fuel issue. i was losing fuel at carburetor (would run on starting fluid) so replaced fuel pump. new (used) one wouldnt pump - no voltage to pump or solenoids in engine compartment. and with the pump "hard-wired" it floods the carb. my book says i dont have a relay for this car. do i? and how do i test it? thx for the help

Above the hood relaese handle is a small black box with a 6 wire connector.

That is the Fuel Pump Control Unit, sometimes labeled *rev sensor* on the wiring diagrahms.

The yellow wire is a tach pulse(from neg side of coil)

When the unit recieves a tach pulse (from a cranking engine) it sends power though to the fuel pump (Blue wire w/orange stripe or black stripe).

You should test that unit to make sure it

A) has 12v to it with the Key on. And that the black wire is ground.

B) get's a coil pulse while cranking (test with RPM function on Multimeter)

C) gives power to the Fuel pump wire during cranking.

thx for the response. the fuel pump control unit is functioning as expected. i tried switching the relay out w one from my 93 loyale (same part #) and still nothing. any other ideas for a failure between the control unit and no power to the pump? thanks again for the help
