Is it overheating at idle or while cruising at speed? How fast does it "shoot up to red"?

When it idles with AC on, it soon gets up to red pretty fast( does the fan suppose to come on? I did not hear any fan), if I drive the car a little on highway, the temp will come down a little, but still in upper range.
Thanks again

The fan should be coming on. Probably a bad thermo switch. It's common on our cars. I gotta go , but someone else will be with you shortly.:)
